CUPE’s National President Mark Hancock – YYZ – August 16th 2025

Is CUPE's leadership prepared to be arrested?
At some point one of the leading unions is gonna have to step up and order their members to stay out and bare the consequences.

I'm at Vancouver Airport where CUPE's Air Canada Component is picketing.

Air Canada flight attendants are still on strike, defying a back-to-work order from the federal government.

CUPE's Mark Hancock is prepared to be jailed for defying the Carney government's back-to-work order to force Air Canada to negotiate with flight attendants

"If it means folks like me going to jail, so be it...Our members want a solution here, but that solution has to be found at a bargaining table"

CUPE's president ripped up the back to work order at a press conference and will be challenging it as unconstitutional. It makes me feel so good to see some real backbone in the labour movement.

The government's "eyebrow-raising" penchant for breaking up strikes finally met its match in the woman-dominated workforce of CUPE's Air Canada unit.

Why the flight attendants' strike was "a perfect storm" for labour:

Eight months into Ottawa’s investigation into flight attendants’ allegations that they’re forced to do unpaid work, the union is raising concerns that it won’t result in any change. @isaacphannay.bsky.social updates. #canlab

Hours afters Air Canada’s CEO admitted it expected the government to use Section 107 and for the union to comply, Air Canada was back at the table and ready to make concessions to get planes in the skies.

You can’t deny that CUPE’s decision to defy the order gave it the leverage to get a deal.

Air Canada strike is over so standing up to a company that doesn’t want to negotiate in good faith seemed the best thing to do on CUPE’s part. The same thing happened to me in Nov. 2022 with Doug Ford. He folded too like a broken lawn chair lol. 😉

i’d say more that it’s been standard in the airline industry for years. that’s started to change at a few airlines in recent years, and cupe’s win will certainly help ensure at changes at even more.

Broadbent Research Fellow Angella MacEwen (@angella.bsky.social) explains how public ownership and public investment are needed to fight inflation, fix inequality, and improve economic productivity.
