"AI may make your job easier, but that effort has just been shifted onto your users. They are noticing it and they hate it."

I've said this before: if you bracket self-delusion, generative "AI" doesn't save labour, it displaces it onto the people who have to deal with the slop.
In 1999, we surfed the Web. Now we comb through it like a fantasy hero. Which posts are treasure, and which are deadly Mimics? What's real, and what's an impersonator trying to steal my attention?

Worse: reading all this bland AI monoculture text leads to us thinking bland AI monoculture thoughts.
AI hypervigilance is now an omnipresent cognitive load for your users
AI may make your job easier, but that effort has just been shifted onto your users. They are noticing it and they hate it.

I did the same thing with my 5.5 yr old nephew today and he does not have such lofty plans, but it did keep him busy for a little while. I still hope he makes a lot of books, though.
taught 5.5 yr old niece to fold zines & she plans to make "a lot of books" let the revolution begin

Absolutely true, but in a lot of ways all this was already proven in the first few months of covid. We have the means and capability to fix most of the major problems of the world, but nobody in power is willing to do it (and we haven't managed to force them to. Yet.)

Great thread by Prof. Bender on AI doomerism, especially worth reading since our "AI Minister" is now engaging in this whole conversation too.

#Cdnpoli #Canada #NoAI
AI Doomerism has been in the news lately, especially with the loud, viral resignation of Jacob Coxon from Anthropic.

Maybe I've missed it, but I haven't seen any statements from CEOs and other execs who are more on the AI Booster side of the ledger.

In Toronto for less time (and later) than in previous years but I was still able to make my annual pilgrimage to my favourite bubble tea shop in north york: "DONT YELL AT ME"

They were out of what was needed for the Tiramisu tea I like to get, so I got an Osmanthus Tea Latte. (Delicious!)

I knew to expect Heinlein and Niven on the bad side, but lots of giants on the good one: Asimov, Bradbury, Lieber, not to mention the obvious ones like LeGuin, Delany, Ellison, PKD, Roddenberry
Here's a cheat sheet for whenever you read an old sci-fi author

I haven't played a Zelda game since Windwaker (which I liked, I'm just not a console guy) so I don't really have a horse in the race, but if we're going maximalist 3D tech I'd love to see something more like this that takes advantage of higher-poly but has starker more dramatic colour
Since Zelda is trending, a friendly reminder how CRAZY good Katsuya Terada is. (1/3)

I do not believe that these guys are about to summon a world-ending superconsciousness from Nvidia graphics cards. But they either believe they can or want me to believe they believe they can. So I think "fuck them" is the only rational response

I don't want to be nostalgic anymore. I'm tired of being catered to. I don't want to forever hear the same artistic voices I heard in my youth, now amplified, slowed and reverbed for dramatic effect. I want new worlds. I want new stories. I want new voices. Please!

This is true to some extent but you have to account for the third arm of the AfD: liberal democracy's own cops and that points to the inherent fascist nature of policing itself and how policing necessarily produces cadres of fascists as a condition of its existence

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed
It may seem odd that the AfD has both former Stasi officers and ex(?)neo-Nazis in its ranks of elected officials, but what brings these people together is their hatred of the liberal democratic constitutional and social order that came out of 1989.
Auf X hat jemand mal geschaut, was da so für Leute als AfD-Abgeordnete in den neuen Landtag von Sachsen-Anhalt einziehen werden. Hier eine kleine Auswahl:

AI stans keep comparing AI to cars and I think the comparison is revealing in ways they very much don't intend

A technology with broadly negative impacts on society we were forced to restructure our lives around due to enormous corporate lobbying? One we are struggling to eliminate today?

Gave into the temptation of the crowd and went to emeri matcha bar on main street, there is always a giant line.

Got the classic matcha latte (very tasty) and their only baked good, "salt bread" which is nicely buttery, a little crispy on the outside and very soft on the inside - also very good.
