There's now a spectrum from pure knob twiddling to doing everything on the computer through an interface.
And nowadays there are tons of preamp and cabsim pedals that you literally use instead of an amp: you plug your other pedals into them, set the amp and cab, and that is your whole rig.

for quiet play at home I now use a 1w blackstar HT1 (actual tubes!) but the headphone output is too quiet so I have it go into the FX return of a simplifier dlx (used to use as my primary but ive grown enough i can hear the lack of tubes) -- it dbls up the poweramp/cabsim but sounds great

actually if that's how i feel i should probably be looking at the zoom g2 four, it's the actual product i want (all-in-one versatile multi-fx + ampsim + cabsim + usb audio interface) and somehow cheaper than the ms-80ir+; unfortunately the form factor is a lot less cute/small…

I will check those amps out, and hopefully I will check my Ibanez head somewhere else too, fun fact, I have an IR cabsim, perhaps I can have an idea how a different speaker would sound before getting the real deal, Celestions are expensive and I will need 4!

Here, an old video from my experimental sessions, there is also a cab simulator present but I'm not sure if it was turned on, because I do remember it made things sound weird. I probably should have used AUX output on the cabsim, but I didn't play long with the JVC boombox anyway, so...
