I met this one too! Cabilao, 2008. Quadrella coronata! Very pretty, very interesting!

A whitish/pale greenish coral guard crab looks menacingly at the photographer while standing firm among the branches of a soft coral Siphonogorgia variabilis. The coral skin is pale pink to yellowish in some areas, while the polyps are dark red in colour.

13th day of #Crustmas already! Voici a little crab from Cabilao, The Philippines, 2008. I have tentatively ID’d it as Quadrella coronata. It has an attitude! But then, most crabs and shrimps do! That’s what makes the such fantastic subjects.
A cream coloured crab sits on a soft coral branch. The coral is pale reddish with dark red polyp tips. This creates a nice contrast with the white tiny crab.

16th day of #Crustmas, and a Monday. One keeps happy memories of all the critters found without the DM’s help. Like this translucent guy. My guess it is a species of Galathea, Squat lobster. But help with ID will be most appreciated!

A white/translucent squat lobster (I think) photographed head on, slightly to the side, with its claws open. It is sitting on a branch of possibly black coral or gorgonian, but surrounded by deep red algae and a few small encrusting white and pink tunicates.

Hi, Skilings! My UW pic of the day is one I actually have on my wall. This is an allied cowrie (Aclyvolva coarctata) attached to a gorgonian, on which it feeds. It imitates the seafan’s colour and texture up to the white polyps when open.

A red cowrie sits on a red gorgonia seafan branch, perfectly camouflaged, with its mantle looking like the gorgonia polyps when open, which are white-tipped. The background is formed by the other branches of the seafan, out of focus, in an overall red and black composition.

Late return from Cabilao led to this unseen view. ✨

Never seen Mactan from the water at night in my 15 years here (no boats allowed at night usually!). The fireworks were the perfect ending to a long day.
