Let's introduce you to my colleagues: the caddisfly larvae. 👋 These underwater insects built protective casings that were originally made from plant material, snail shells or small stones. They are true architects. 📐📏 2/x

NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀

Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯

A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛

Let's dive in! 🧵👇 1/x

Another Caddisfly larva feeding, this time on a more typical food, scraping algae/biofilm off a dead leaf
Pretty sure this is Limnephilidae

More concepts for Kromlech: hive "architecture". I wanted the lurgs to be further from the greenskinned mongol barbarian orc stereotype and to use more animal elements - beaver dams, wasp nests, the shells of caddisfly larvae.

Occupied but deep in the retreat.

BUT! It stuck a little pisidium clam on its case.

"It is giving evil Olaf from Frozen," as said by the observant person who captured these amazing photos of an insect-colonizing fungus species, Erynia rhizospora, on a caddisfly.

It’s like a bag worm and a caddisfly larvae. Looking it up now.

For those that haven't watched my latest pond dipping YT video, here are some clips of the phryganeidae Caddisfly nymph, including the moment I saw it eating something, that turned out to be a Dragonfly Nymph!

A little caddisfly on a lichen-covered boulder, near a waterfall in Montana. Caddisfly adults look a bit like moths, and in fact their order (Trichoptera) is most closely related to moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera). Caddisflies have aquatic larvae which can spin silk.

Holy crap on a cracker! FINALLY ID'd this caddisfly!

Only took 8 years. (and you thought bird ID was hard🤣)

Found 5 more yesterday, same spot - first I've seen since 2018 - but went the same week this year (whoda thunk! 🤦‍♀️)

THEN scrolled through 20 pages of Oregon caddisfly pics-- 1/3 #inverts

Happy #kidlitartpostcard day!

I combined my insect alphabet with my postcard today— & C is for one of my favorites, caddisfly larva!

big breath

Some aquatic creatures* in their larval form, spin an intricate net, -underwater- using its own produced silk to capture food particles, is yet another reason life on Earth is like nowhere else.

I mean, look at the detail!!

This study really shows the value of natural history collections 🏛️ We should cherish these institutions! You never know how important a single specimen might become. ✨ After 54 years in a drawer, this tiny casing turned out to have an incredible story to tell. 🐛 13/x

Caddisfly larvae! Some species build cases from silk + various rocks, plant bits or even shells for protection – some arguably cosier than others

Important question: if you were a caddisfly, what would you use to build your case?

To find out we dived into the Naturalis collection. ✨

Far from being a single overarching collection, a natural history collection brings together many collections. 🏛️Some, such as the caddisfly’s casing, are miniature collections crafted by insects. 🐛 7/x
