here is my first draft of the mechanic. we’re stapling it onto Cairn 2e at the end of a major arc. i thought it would be fun for players to enter their own items into the annals of history. (had to get a botns reference in there too hehe)
11 Inspiration We believe that we invent symbols. The truth is that they invent us; we are their creatures, shaped by their hard, defining edges. It is a profound mistake to believe that we must know of such things to be influenced by them. Things act of themselves or not at all. After coming into contact with wondrous magic, participating in fierce battles, or otherwise contending with things above your station, you might come away feeling inspired. You may use inspiration to bestow a name to a piece of gear; be it armor, weapon, or tool. When you use the legacy of an item as narrative justification, you gain advantage on your roll ? You may do this once per session. Over time, the story of these items may spread, adding to your reputation. People who have heard the story might recognize you, for better or worse. An item's legacy may outlive you, and what is remembered will undoubtedly be but a shadow of the truth. examples from fiction and history: Cat's Claw, Greywand, Heartseeker, Scalpel, Sting, Durendal, Joyeuse, Dhul Fiqar, Terminus Est, Nothung, Firebrand, The Golden Coat, Helm of Awe, Aegis. 1. roll twice, take the best result. -
