"vivziepop artstyle" is the new "calarts artstyle" for salty and uppity animation fans who have no actual good-faith criticism of things they don't like.

Like 2 years ago I had to literally do a fundraiser for Palestinian children outside in the wind and rain cuz Calarts deemed it too ‘politcal’

Which makes no sense because Vivzie's art style is actually very unique, few if any other shows outside of the Hellaverse really have it

"CalArts style" was in response to the "bean mouth" style a lot of shows in the mid-late 2010s seemed to have (most of which weren't even from CalArts alumni)

Fun with Father (1984), dir. Chris Sanders, CalArts

A student film that Sanders made many years before Lilo & Stitch

Hollywood Museum part II: This '60s rendering shows where it would've been, SE of the Bowl.

Plus, on the bluff below Lake Hollywood was the scrapped CalArts site. Disney wanted its animation grads close to Burbank. All 3 venues were to form the Cahuenga Pass cultural district.

This may be my last chance to say it this cycle but I Am Tired Of This Sticker.

Year after year in my county it’s This Sticker.

We have both Art Center and CalArts here. We have artists everywhere.

We should have a unique super cute sticker that everybody wants in every enclave.

i used to really hate drawing chubby faces like the iconic calarts Face Lump but nowadays i love how quickly it changes the shape language of a character into something dorkier and cuter

I think it is worth noting that before social media and YouTube artists had to go to places like CalArts and those that wanted to teach themselves had to buy overpriced how to draw books with not so great authors that were good at drawing. And limited resources on anatomy. I didnt forget that shit.

The fact that "calarts style" was coined by a hack animator who got his ass fired for never meeting deadlines, & has a long history of grooming & pedophelia, should be VERY telling about this kind of elitist attitude among artists.

CalArts Style: well, well, well... look who came crawling back.
October 30, 2026 at 9:57 PM
Whether it be that an artist goes through the calarts slaughter OR they start drawing more with their dick than their dominant hand, actually doesn't fucking matter in the slightest.

What matters is: does the artist enjoy making art? If yes, then good!!

I'll take Viv's style over the calarts styel any day.

Calarts style... Vivziepop style... Those spumheads will never give up.

One of the strongest memories I have from CalArts was when Ken Bruce showed his storyboard class this classic piece of Oregon history.

Delightfully horrific and absurd all at the same time.

Cocoon (Daixuan Yuan)

such a beautiful bit of animation, the dali and klimt vibes! the bit at 2:44! helps to have read edogawa ranpo's "a brute's love" (or junji ito's "an unearthly love"), but still a feast for the eyes if you haven't. it's 4 minutes, check it out!

I cite calarts and drawing nsfw as those tend to be thrown under the bus as far as reasons why an artist suddenly "regresses" but the idea of art regression can come from anything. Especially when an artist is in transition of learning and improving to their goals or have simply CHANGED methods.

sometimes i think back to the "calarts style" discourse and think about how insane that was, but i also remember that through all of human history people believed the best they could with what was known at the time. perhaps cutesy round cartoons in 2015 were much like left-handedness in the past
November 2, 2026 at 10:57 PM
also the "calarts style patient zero" being steven universe will always be kinda funny given that its creator went to school in new york. round and cute stuff prevailed in popularity in the 2010s and that's what kids networks wanted. there's a reason most edges were sanded off from pilot to series

Here’s one thing they probably don’t know:

Not only was the term “CalArts Style” coined by John K, but he wasn’t even referring to bean mouths with said term.
October 30, 2026 at 4:14 AM
"CalArts bean mouth" discourse was started in the wave of alt-right propaganda that was consciously trying to pivot American conservatism from the old school of proudly having nothing to do with stories and popular media, to the reactionary nerdcourse we all know and hate today

I never attended Calarts, but I did work at #Pixar, so I had to take this picture while on a Calarts tour, especially since I helped add this Easter Egg to Up and Good Dino.

Though @CalArts
is built like a tank, apparently it suffered structural damage.

So, Calarts moved into the @CIA
campus for a few months, like all Art schools in the US do.

Nothing to see except for the wind tunnel.

And this has nothing to do with why I am being poisoned now
