Good news: Governor Newsom signed SB 1167!

Authored by Senator Catherine Blakespear and co-sponsored by CalBike, the new law draws a clear line between legal e-bikes and high-powered electric devices too often marketed as e-bikes.

CalBike & many local bike advocacy groups around California did an amazing job staving off the worst of 2026’s e-bike legislative proposals while promoting & allowing good ones like SB1167 through.

Make sure to donate to your state/local bike orgs to maintain this progress.

CalBike opposes this bill giving fire departments more control of bikeways and so do I.

For too long fire departments have had too much power blocking complete street implementations. I will be following this bill and contacting my representatives about my opposition.

Maybe you can to?

CalBike and our allies are taking a stand against AB 612, a poorly defined bill that would put firefighters in the role of traffic engineers.

Press Release: Governor Newsom Signs CalBike-Sponsored Bill to Strengthen Walking and Biking Programs - CalBike
The California Bicycle Coalition (CalBike) today celebrated Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of AB 2168, authored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and sponsored by CalBike. The new law strengthens California’s Active Transportation Program (ATP), the state’s primary source of dedicated funding for walking and biking infrastructure, by improving how projects are chosen, funded, and delivered.

A new ten-year Canadian study shows that bike lanes can reduce injuries and increase bicycling rates. But only if they're protected.

Good news for everyone who wants California to get e-bike policy right: AB 1942 and AB 1557 have died in appropriations.

Now the path is clearer for SB 1167, co-sponsored by CalBike, Streets For All, and SAFE, to protect legal e-bikes and bring honesty to the marketplace.

That means clearer labels, more honest marketing, and better information for families choosing their next ride.

“Parents should be able to shop for an e-bike without having to investigate whether the product lives up to its description,” said CalBike Executive Director Kendra Ramsey.

Intersections like this on on Wyse Rd are a trap for both cyclists and pedestrians. When children are harmed, we should be re-evaluating. Quick-build tactical projects could even be led and built by @cyclehalifax.ca membership , also Walk n Roll

I just attended Waymo talk at CalBike conference today

Panelists argued Waymo should be allowed to program their cars to use bike lanes as long as human drivers use them 😡

@calbike.bsky.social, can you author legislation to force AV companies to follow the law and respect bike lanes?
"Waymo has told advocates that expecting it to respect bike lanes is 'too high a bar' because customers expect to be dropped off in them."

To be crystal clear, it's illegal for a car to be in a bike lane. It doesn't matter what Waymo's customers expect; the company shouldn't be doing it.

At least two of the cities where Waymo operates have not experienced declines in traffic-related injuries and deaths.
