On this day 25 years ago: This 1st summer American Golden Plover at Upware, Cambs.

Not a common bird in West Suffolk, I have tried for one and missed before, but much more frequent just over the border in Cambridgeshire.

This week 25 yrs ago: Isabelline Wheatear at Landguard. With quite a few scarcities.

Red-necked Stint at Somersham followed later in the day with Pallass’s Grasshopper Warbler ✅ on Blakeney Point (never thought I would see one so well) with Ortolan and Grey Phalarope bonus.

Flood it, and they will come. Isleham Wash looking very promising, for the first time in many months.

Just a Greenshank and Common Sandpiper, also the first returning Teal, but looking good for the future. Will try and visit more frequently now.

Frustrating "one that got away" / not wholly confirmed, but just heard two calls of Stone-curlew over the house just now. Unfortunately, I was inside at the time and I couldn't see anything looking north out the window 😕 #cambsbirds

2 Redshank, 6 Avocet, Green Sandpiper and Oystercatcher at Isleham Wash. Lots of mud, so bodes well for Waders, providing it doesn’t dry out some more. Not such good conditions for the 5 Common Terns, 2 Gadwall and 1 Shoveler.

Surprisingly, I did manage 45 minutes of birding this afternoon. This Black Tern was my first, maybe the first, at Isleham Wash. a successful twitch inbetween Mothing.

My first Dotterel in 4 years. 3ff & 2mm near Gamlingay. They turned up before I went away, and I wondered if they would hang on. As they did I thought I would have to go and have a look. @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social #CambsBirds

6 Dotterel - Gamlingay (Cambridgeshire) 24/4/26 possibly the worst record shot of them due to the heat haze 🥴#cambsbirds #ukbirding #ukbirds #birds @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social @btoengland.bsky.social @britishbirds.bsky.social

6 Dotterel still at Gamlingay (Cambridgeshire) though very hard work to find in the heat haze. Also 1 Wheatear on the track & 2 Raven #cambsbirds #ukbirding #ukbirds #birds @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social @btoengland.bsky.social @britishbirds.bsky.social

Big mistake to use my free hit (Mrs M is having a Spa day) to go to the Nene washes in horrendous weather conditions. Blizzard, freezing!
6 PF Geese over, 30 Whooper swans and a few Marsh Harrier, but I couldn’t see much as it was driving snow and absolutely freezing 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I'm quite old school, so I still get a buzz from seeing a Great White Egret, even more so when it's on the patch. One in fields just east of Mill Hill Garage (March) this morning. #cambsbirds #ukbirding

Putting the (wheelie) bins out, a flock of barnacle geese has just gone over the house (March, ✔️NFG!). Unfortunately no phone to hand to record them. Wild birds, perhaps, displaced by Storm Bernard (or whatever the name is 😂)? #cambsbirds

Bypassed the 2 county rares this morning 🤦🏻‍♂️ for a failed attempt at the Lesser Yellowlegs at Etton Maxey pits.
Probably hunkered down in the corner somewhere as Storm Amy was rattling through.
Did manage a Rock Pipit and a Greenshank though.
