The Canadian Opera Company's latest production of Jules Massenet’s Werther, co-produced with Opéra de Montréal and Vancouver Opera, delivers a lavish and emotionally intense experience. The opera, based on Goethe’s 1774 novel, follows the tragic story of Werther, portrayed by American tenor Russell Thomas, whose unreciprocated love for Charlotte (mezzo-soprano Victoria Karkacheva) ultimately leads to despair. The production effectively combines dramatic staging, expressive musical interpretation, and thoughtful costume and set design. Olivier Landreville’s stage design transforms from a whimsical outdoor setting into intimate, claustrophobic spaces that reflect Werther’s psychological turmoil. Costume designer Lëilah Dufour Forget uses colour to underscore character development, particularly Charlotte’s evolution throughout the story. Johannes Debus’s conducting highlights Massenet’s rich score, capturing both Werther’s ecstatic highs and despairing lows. Despite limited chemistry between the leads, their performances convey genuine suspense and emotional depth. The production also introduces nuanced social context, considering Thomas’s racial difference as an additional layer in Werther’s sense of isolation. Minor pacing issues exist between scenes due to lighting transitions, but overall, the production succeeds in delivering the intense pathos and dramatic richness that modern opera often struggles to maintain.
