The Buddha once told of two acrobats on a pole. This is the sport of mallakambha, shown here on pottery of 200 BCE from Chandaketugarh, not far from the Sutta’s setting. Both pottery and Sutta depict a female acrobat. Also, in the Sutta they are caṇḍāla, from the despised caste of corpse-workers.
