Op de afbeelding staat een macro-opname van een insect op een groene blad. Het insect is goudgeel van kleur met zwarte accenten op zijn kop en borststuk. Het heeft lange, dunne antennes en duidelijke facetogen. De poten zijn slank en het lijkt iets kleins, mogelijk een ander insect, vast te hebben of op te eten. Dit insect lijkt op een soort bladhaantje of keverachtige, mogelijk een soldaatkever (Cantharidae) of een ander roofinsect. De achtergrond is onscherp, wat de focus volledig op het insect legt.

I'm leaning more toward Cantharidae based on pronotal shape and tarsi, although hell if I can suggest anything specific. It looks like there are some Asian genera of Podabrini with at least slightly dimorphic antennae. Nothing that extreme though. Really strange!

Atalantycha bilineata at the light trap. Adults are often seen on flowers, likely feeding on nectar or pollen. Larvae are associated with rotting wood, but we still don’t know much about their biology. Found in the backyard. So much left unknown.

Cantharis cryptica, wird wohl auch schon mal als "Verborgener Weichkäfer" benannt. Wenn man die 2 so sieht, weiß man auch warum die sich gerne einmal zurückziehen :-)

Zwei orange-rote Weichkäfer (Cantharis cryptica) bei der Paarung auf einem grünen Blatt. Die Käfer zeigen die charakteristische orange-rote Färbung. Ein Käfer sitzt in typischer Paarungsstellung (Körperenden im 90°-Winkel aneinandergepresst) auf dem anderen. Beide Insekten weisen die kennzeichnenden Merkmale der Soldatenkäfer auf: längliche Fühler, auffällige dunkle Augen und verhältnismäßig weiche Flügeldecken. Die Aufnahme zeigt feine Details ihrer segmentierten Körper und Beine vor der strukturierten grünen Blattoberfläche mit unscharf grünem Hintergrund.

Today’s featured insect specimen from Manitoba is Dichelotarsus flavimanus, commonly known as the yellow-handed soldier beetle. Soldier beetles (Cantharidae) are relatively soft-bodied and are commonly found on flowers. This species was first described in 1860 by Motschulsky.
