I was lucky enough to travel to Haiti a few years ago and was familiar with a lot of the history and some of the sites referenced in the novel. The Haitian revolution is completely fascinating…the trip was the most inspiring I’ve ever been on.

64-gun HMS Stirling Castle was with a squadron off Cap Haïtien which was scattered by the hurricane, and was blown onto a reef and wrecked. Most of the crew survived but 20 men were swept out to sea on a piece of the wreck. By the time they were rescued several days later only 5 men remained alive.
