We try for one a year - rethinking next year’s, which would have been all the way up through Namibia, along the Caprivi Strip/Zambezia to Victoria Falls, then down through Botswana. Around 8000 km…think we’ll just do Etosha!

The most we can hope for is a Caprivi who offers some nothingburger "concessions" to the exaggerated rage of local Hakata analogue.

Bismarck was so furious that his successor Caprivi negotiated such a lopsided swap that he referred to it in the press as "exchanging trousers for a button"--Germany's interests in Zanzibar were far more valuable than tiny Helgoland in his view.

Caprivi died in 1899 at the estate of his niece in eastern Brandenburg, just a few km east of the Oder River. The village became part of Poland in 1945.

The manor house was destroyed in the Red Army advance, but the family cemetery with his gravesite still exists, albeit in a dilapidated condition.

What does that odd arm of land reaching out from Namibia have to do with a tiny North Sea island?
It connected the German colony of South-West Africa (now Namibia) to the Zambezi River, and thus the German colony of East Africa (now Tanzania). It and Helgoland were swapped with Britain for Zanzibar.

This is his first renaming suggestion suggestion that makes sense to me: Trump’s Caprivi Strip.

Was die Zeit seit 1949 angeht - ja.

Road trip through South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

Drive through the Zambezi Region, formerly known as Caprivi Strip, a 450-kilometre narrow strip from the Kavango Region in Namibia to Kasane in Botswana from where you can visit the Chobe National Park.

1996 This is my partner Birgit on the road from the Caprivi Strip in Namibia to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. She's on a 1972 BMW R60/5. Just minutes before we'd been engines just ticking while waiting to see what a herd of elephants on the road would do.

It's worse than Croatia, The Gambia, the Wakhan Corridor, the Siliguri Corridor, the Caprivi Strip, and maybe even that central Asian "stan" mess where - in a straight line - you can go Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Tajik, Uzbek, Tajik, Kyrgyz, Tajik. Countries w/weird shapes bc of coastline get a pass.

PS: Hayek makes much of that quote in his "Road to Serfdom"; but very unfairly by leaving the context out. His ignorance becomes apparent when he writes that Bebel was addressing Bismarck who was no longer in power at the time. Would have to look it up, but I think Caprivi would be correct.
