basically all issues with subtitles come down to: captioners are underpaid and have to work fast, there is little to no quality control, and captioners are forced to make the product as simplistic and uniform as possible to cover up the first two problems.

Amicable relationships with artists means obtaining consent first, not stealing our work without permission to slap things we may strongly disagree with on top of them.
Captioners and editors can claim they respect artists but not a single one knows what consent means.

One year of Latin teaching, a student had a live captioner in my class as part of an accommodation. And god damn the things I learned just by talking to the various captioners who did that work! My classroom teaching got better for /everyone/ based on listening to (and using!) their advice.
That said, generative captioning is a bullshit solution to an accessibility problem.
All the money wasted on generative captioning could've been used to provide actual live captioning services, ASL interpreters, or any of the proven accessibility aids used for decades.

Signing is not a great way to communicate with folks like us. ASL interpreters are but one tool alongside machine captions and just fixing yer damn levels.
