One of the things I have enjoyed about having bird feeders is how the wild birds and our free range flock interact. When the flock sees a bird at the feeder they tend to run over to get any seeds that fall off the feeder platforms.

all I'm taking from this is that our state bird could have been the carolina chickadee and instead it's the northern cardinal. fucking ridiculous. they couldn't have even made it the carolina wren which is just as common as the cardinal? why do we have basically a default state bird

50 years ago, the biggest thing in baseball was a bird. Not a Blue Jay, Cardinal or Oriole. It was Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, who pitched inning after inning AFTER INNING for an otherwise unremarkable Detroit Tigers team. Pre-game ceremonies and postgame fireworks shows were part of the bicentennial celebration, but nothing was nearly as spectacular or explosive as Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. Even with solid minor league numbers, the 10th-round draft pick didn't arrive in Motown on a cloud of media hype. Fidrych was the last man on the Tigers' staff out of spring training. Manager Ralph Houk planned to let The Bird do more sitting and observing at the start of the season, which explains why he didn't debut until the team's 7th game on April 20.

Brilliant red male northern cardinal bird up close in light and shadow that are at a diagonal across it’s chest. The blur in the background gives a nice bokeh, mostly because of the way the shadow follows the same line, bringing balance while also enhancing the intensity and starkness of this bright red tufted bird.

Today was opening day of The Art of Birding exhibit at the @novascotiamuseum.bsky.social in #Halifax. This was the first time I got to see the photographs, wood carvings, and needle felt artwork of birds. It all looks fantastic!

I hope you get a chance to visit. The exhibit is on until Jan. 2027.
