Can mechanical forces disrupt cardiac rhythms? Wang et al. model how periodic forces entrain, destabilize, or split calcium oscillations in cardiomyocytes, potentially triggering bursting-like dynamics beyond a critical threshold. buff.ly/MmQMd1F
A mechanochemical model for frequency entrainment and bursting transitions in cardiac calcium oscillations
Rhythmic contraction of cardiomyocytes is driven by self-sustained intracellular calcium oscillations. While these oscillations are typically attributed to intrinsic calcium cycling, increasing…

In 2019, @berterolab.bsky.social, Fields et al. discovered an mRNA that appears to do just this. In cardiomyocytes, nascent TTN RNA organizes a compartment that concentrates the splicing factor RBM20 and brings together loci from multiple chromosomes. An "RNA Factory" scaffolded on a pre-mRNA!
October 28, 2026 at 6:14 AM
This approach yielded exceptionally precise biotinylation in both WT and ∆RBM20 cardiomyocytes: just two biotin foci—corresponding to the two alleles of TTN.

In the context of two meters of folded DNA, O-MAP can home in and affinity-tag a single-locus nuclear compartment.
October 28, 2026 at 6:15 AM
We were particularly interested in QKI and SAFB, which are critical regulators of RNA splicing and chromatin organization. Both were strongly enriched in the TTN factory, with striking colocalization observed in cultured cardiomyocytes and human fetal heart tissue.

I want to write a book called biology is BS all about exceptions. Did you know about a quarter of your cardiomyocytes are not diploid? Mitosis is BS. Did you know E. coli only share about 40% of their core genes? Species are BS. Did you know your cells swap mitochondria? Cells are BS
I always said biology is the only science with exceptions to every "rule".
When I was a student moving from engineering to biology, I often heard that I was moving to a ‘soft science.’ Whereas physics and chemistry and mathematics had ground truth rules that were true no matter what, biology seemed like anarchy by comparison.
