This involves direct care; taking son to medical appointments/activities away from home; completing paper/admin/audits & communicating with/navigating services. Nonstop. I feel like a robot!

Today is #CarersRightsDay – our #WomanoftheNorth report released this year shows that northern women contribute £10bn of unpaid care to the UK economy each year. This is £2bn a year more than if they provided the national average of unpaid care.

We heard from a carer: “At the moment there is no support as a carer. There’s a whole world of theoretical things, this is what should happen and the rest of it, but in reality there is very little.” Even though steps have been taken to support carers, many who spoke to us still feel their situation hasn’t improved much. Our single recommendation is for Scottish Government to recognise carers as equal partners in care. Not just in theory, but in everyday practice, with clear rights to information, meaningful involvement in care planning, and provided with necessary support.
