This picture dates to the early 1880s, shortly after Albert de Belleroche had enrolled at the atelier of Carolus Duran. Here Belleroche met John Singer Sargent. A life-long friendship ensued, with both the artists sharing studios in Paris and London. With thanks to Paul Liss.

Louise Lefevre (1861-1950) was the wife of a young, ambitious lawyer who became an important French politician. A work of unusual intimacy and informality, this portrait is distinguished by its domestic setting, attention to lush textiles, and backlighting, filtered through gauzy curtains. Sargent carefully constructed his composition using the tonal painting technique he had learned in the studio of Carolus-Duran, intensified by his study of Velázquez. In 1910, many years after Sargent had painted the portrait, French poet and aesthete Robert de Montesquiou saw it in the Escudier home and dedicated a poem to it. A harsh critic of Sargent's work, Montesquiou admired this early portrait despite himself, noting that it was painted "back when [Sargent] had talent." #art #painting

Sargent's teacher Carolus-Duran famously urged his students: "Velázquez, Velázquez, Velázquez, relentlessly study Velázquez!" When Sargent finished his formal training in Paris, he dutifully traveled to Madrid and registered as a copyist at the Prado Museum, the greatest repository of the Spanish painter's work in the world. Between mid-October and mid-November 1879, Sargent copied at least nine paintings by Diego Velázquez, including the masterpiece Las Meninas (1656), a portrait of Infanta Margarita Teresa, the young daughter of King Philip IV of Spain, surrounded by her attendants. This copy reveals Sargent's attention to Velázquez's spatial and compositional construction, tonalities, chiaroscuro, and technique. It also reveals Sargent's extraordinary skill-his idiosyncratic brushwork, which is vigorous and confident, is already recognizable. Sargent absorbed these lessons into his own oeuvre, especially in his portrait of the Boit daughters nearby. #art #painting

Charlotte Burckhardt (1862-1892) was the twenty-year-old daughter of a Swiss merchant and his American wife, members of the artist's cosmopolitan circle in Paris. The monochromatic palette, shallow space, and emphasis on the figure's silhouette pay tribute to the Spanish master Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), whose work Sargent's teacher Carolus-Duran had encouraged him to study. Her demure expression and gesture, proffering a rose, added an appealing narrative element. The unapologetically flattering portrait was contrived to appeal to patrons. At the Paris Salon of 1882, it met with high praise: one French critic described it as a "ravishing type." Celebrating Sargent's skill, American novelist Henry James declared that his work "offers the slightly 'uncanny' spectacle of a talent which on the very threshold of its career has nothing more to learn." #art #painting
