#Carricante
Etna Bianco is driven by a grape called Carricante. It’s an ancient variety that grows on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna. It has high acid and a distinct salinity that makes your mouth water instantly.

Carricante Grape Variety: Sicily's secret weapon
Sicily's Carricante grapes thrive on Mount Etna's slopes, producing fresh, high-acidity white wines with complex aromas, a hallmark of Etna Bianco DOC.

Carricante gets its name from the Italian word "carica," which means "load." It was named that because the vines are naturally super productive and would produce a huge "load" of grapes if farmers didn't prune them back aggressively. www.wine-searcher.com/grape-989-ca...

Tasted today:

'16 I Vigneri (Foti) Palmento Caselle - Own rooted Carricante from 750m on Etna. Packs a lot of muscle onto a svelte frame, simultaneously showing crisp salinity & pretty, forward fruit. The story of this wine is great, not so sure about the $$$s 1/

Hotter climes fortunately abound for the Vin de Plume tasting bus.

This not ‘the bestest’ aged Carricante is a little caramel toasted but in beautifully liquid volcanic smoke and citrus way. Oof! 💋♥️🇮🇹

If you love Chablis or dry Riesling (and we do), you are going to love Carricante. It shares that same razor-sharp acidity and "wet stone" minerality, but with a Mediterranean salty twist that is unique. www.decanter.com/wine-news/op...

We Love: Lavi Carricante £15.20. This is the dominant grape variety of Etna's white wines which shows elegant melon and lightly peachy fruit with hints of Mediterranean herbs and a long, mineral-streaked finish. Chablis-esque class, designed for food. https://buff.ly/3WAc7WV #HelloWinchester

Volcanic Vines: The Story Behind Carricante’s Unique Flavor
Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe, is a representation of tenacity and change. A grape that reflects this dichotomy is found on its rocky slopes, which are covered in a patchwork of vineyards: Carricante. Cultivated in Sicily for centuries, this old white cultivar provides a wonderful representation of its volcanic terroir. Carricante captures the spirit of a place sculpted by fire and time, from its flavours full of minerals to its lively acidity.

Attending the annual Etna Days was both thrilling and daunting. On the first day, I walked into a room filled with more than 500 wines from 110 producers spread across every slope of Mount Etna. Where would I even begin? I set my focus on Carricante from Milo on Etna’s Eastern Slope.
Milo: Finding Focus on Etna’s Eastern Slope
Attending the annual Etna Days was both thrilling and daunting. On the first day, I walked into a room filled with more than 500 wines from 110 producers spread across every slope of Mount Etna. Where would I even begin? North, south, northeast, east, southeast? With Etna’s 142 contrade, the officially recognized sub-zones, each defined by its own soil, elevation, and microclimate, the possibilities felt endless.

Please The Palate Wine of the Week: Tenuto di Castellaro Lipari 2021 Corinto Nero, IGT Terre Siciliane Rosso
Italy is home to more than 350 officially recognized indigenous grape varieties, with more than another 1500 still to be recognized. It is a vast world that I have spent time studying and learning about. While in Sicily this past week for Sicily en Premeur, I was able to taste many of the Sicilian grapes I was familiar with - Nero d'Avola, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese, Carricante, and many more. But when I was poured a glass of Corinto, it was a first. As since I love discovering new grape varieties, it is no surprise that the Tenuta di Castellaro Lipari 2021 Corinto Nero, IGT Terre Siciliane Rosso is the Please The Palate wine of the Week.
