Henri Cartier-Bresson visited Tyneside in 1978 following an invitation from Amber Associates, a progressive collective of filmmakers and photographers who ran Newcastle's iconic Side Gallery. The gallery had opened just a year prior in 1977, dedicated to celebrating humanistic social documentary photography. To elevate local engagement and chronicle contemporary working-class life, they commissioned the world-famous French master to spend a few weeks in the North East of England documenting the people of Newcastle, Gateshead, and the surrounding Tyneside coast. The visit culminated in a dedicated exhibition titled Henri Cartier-Bresson: Photographs of the North East at the Side Gallery. This series provided a unique perspective, capturing the unique industrial and coastal character of late-1970s Britain through his famous "decisive moment" approach.
