Spittlebug nymphs (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea) create masses of bubbles from their butts. They hide in these masses while feeding on plants in order to hide from predators. This individual was feeding on a night-flowering silene (Caryophyllaceae: Silene noctiflora). Blissfield Michigan, 20 May 2011.

Night-flowering silene (Caryophyllaceae: Silene noctiflora) is native to Eurasia but has been spread across much of the world. In North America it's a common weed in grain crops. The flowers open at night to attract moths who feed on the nectar and pollinate them. Blissfield Michigan, 26 Jun 2025.

Silene flos-cuculi, commonly known as the ragged robin, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. Native to Europe and Asia, it is found along roads and in wet meadows and pastures, and has also become naturalized in parts of North America.

there is a chain of bare granite habitats running along the piedmont from roughly Atlanta to Richmond.

This is one of those habitats, and a specialist plant that calls it home.
