Castlereagh Reserve in NW Sydney protects the last patch of this unique forest type. It's a mix of ironbark stands and Castlereagh Scribbly Gum with a diverse shrub layer and ground cover. I introduced a small group from Jane Goodall's local Roots and Shoots chapter to the joys of birding today.

Castlereagh and Canning fought a duel in Putney, which collapsed the Portland government and led to Perceval becoming PM.
There's just got to be a better way to do this.

A favourite piece of invective:

Epitaph to Castlereagh (Byron)

"Posterity will ne'er survey
A nobler grave than this:
Here lie the bones of Castlereagh:
Stop, traveller, and piss."

I plan to try to revive interest in Byron's poem about Castlereagh when it happens:

Posterity will ne’er survey
a Nobler grave than this:
Here lie the bones of Castlereagh:
Stop, traveller, and p*** !

This scenario is repeated endlessly across rural NSW. Poisons the Castlereagh River with asbestos, gets the shits when accused of wrongdoing. #auspol Hillbilly rule.

In the early nineteenth century the suicides of prominent public figures were linked to blackmail (for example, Lord Castlereagh in 1822). In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Hirschfeld collected the life histories of 10,000 homosexual men and women,

Classic epitaph from the 1800s (by Byron):

Posterity will ne'er survey a Nobler grave than this: Here lie the bones of Castlereagh: Stop, traveller, and piss!

If you're familiar with Castlereagh, you're probably also familiar with Shelley/Byron's verses about him that did much to popularise the image of 'Bloody Castlereagh.'

But there's another writer from the same movement whose literary creation was also used to build a dark image of Castlereagh:

2/x Born in 1805 into the English aristocracy, a descendant of Charles II on one side, nephew of Lord Castlereagh on the other. He entered the naval college at twelve, passed his lieutenant's exam with full marks, and was marked early as the coming man of the surveying service.

My next proposal for the Sydney CBD: pedestrianise Castlereagh St and Sussex St and put light rail down them both and create a Sydney CBD light rail loop

… both Wellington and Castlereagh were probably dangerously Irish, too.

The Elizabeth St underpass at Martin Pl has finally reopened!
