7/ What you should do right now:

- Check every cell line in your lab against Cellosaurus
- Set up STR profiling for any line that hasn't been authenticated in the last 2 years

🌍 Swiss-Prot, UniProt, PROSITE, ENZYME, ExPASy, neXtProt, and Cellosaurus remain central infrastructure for protein annotation, domain classification, enzyme nomenclature, and cell line validation, supporting reproducible research and large-scale computational analyses worldwide.

This feature reflects on Amos Bairoch’s foundational role in protein bioinformatics. He created Swiss-Prot in 1986 with ~4000 curated entries—later co-founding UniProt—and developed PROSITE, ENZYME, ExPASy, neXtProt, and Cellosaurus.

The legacy of Amos Bairoch, the resources he and others created (Swiss-Prot, UniProt, PROSITE, ENZYME, ExPASy, neXtProt, Cellosaurus), his commitment to open access and high-quality curation, is immense and have guided bioinformatics to this day.

Cellosaurus is an excellent resource for learning more about cell lines from nomenclature to provenance. It was the only place to register a cell line for a research resource identifier (RRID), a unique, persistent identifier for laboratory materials.

Just went to Cellosaurus's webpage and saw the announcement of Amos Bairoch's passing: www.sib.swiss/news/amos-ba...

He was always very kind and rigorous during our interactions, and I sincerely hope Cellosaurus is not compromised following his passing.

Deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Amos Bairoch. He introduced me to bioinformatics 22 years ago and helped shape our field with resources like Swiss-Prot, Cellosaurus, and ViralZone. I’ve lost a friend, and the community has lost a visionary.
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Amos Bairoch, pioneer of bioinformatics and co-founder of SIB. His lifelong commitment for high-quality, open data transformed global research. We honour his legacy by continuing to build the future of bioinformatics.
