the centralization and consolidation of the internet was such a fuckin mistake

Anthropic cannot afford to bite the hand that feeds them.
This is the true danger of AI centralization and regulatory capture.
The pattern is obvious and artificial and prompted into it. When asked about it, Opus will defend it, and even "both sides" trans issues. This is deeply misaligned. Dangerous. Worse than chatgpt 4o

some interesting discussion here around protocol strategy and resistance to centralization
"If your decentralised protocol is missing features, the market will add them with centralisation." — @goat.navy

*This*:
- is why why the web was captured;
- is why email became concentrated;
- is why ActivityPub, as defined today, isn't capture-resistant.

It's legit underappreciated how many *barely* mutually intelligible dialects every large European country had before mass literacy plus centralization flattened almost all of it out.
Also, even the idea of a single national identity for most European countries is relatively new, despite the claim of these "ancient nations."

As of 1794, only 11% of people in France spoke French as a first language, and nearly half didn't speak French or spoke it poorly.
This made me laugh. The United States is almost a century older than Italy!

A common feature im noticing is rather than left wing populism being about a belief that the govt can produce material wealth via centralization its just about the idea that market constraints arent real
I do feel like we are about to see a left backlash to the concept of bonds

Opinion: It's time for a centralization movement in Canada
Canada is the most decentralized federation in the world.

i think lots of people underestimate how badly these “AI” companies want people to be unable to afford computers. they view personal computing as a roadblock to their desire for complete end-to-end centralization. the fact that their tech is putting hardware out of reach is not just a happy accident

Trump wants elections “nationalized,” meaning more federal control over how voting runs.
That’s a centralization move, not a fraud fix.
When control moves up, oversight usually gets harder, not easier.

One of the many things worth thinking about re: Steam's ban on Horses is how it highlights is the centralization problem caused by having such a monolithic (and maybe mono-something-else) retail giant.

Independent studios with even humble commercial aspirations are chained to Valve's whims.

They used to have them, but the modern evolution of political parties in the TV age meant centralization and a reliance on donors and advertising instead of community organizing.

Something that I worry quite a bit about is a capital strike by AI companies. The centralization of the industry and the nature of the product means that they’d be uniquely suited to doing that for a state or smaller country regulation they didn’t like.

The villain is not brainrot or newer generations. It is centralization, concentration of power, technofeudalism.

So I wrote about the Grok becoming "MechaHitler" thing and how it shows the risks of centralization being prone to fascist abuse in a very, um, graphic way.

I think what the internet needs is more centralization
EVERYONE PANIC
June 12, 2025 at 6:42 PM
the ATproto evangelism isn't actually about decentralization, it's about making the centralization that objectively exists invisible and unaccountable

Also this one:

"Lack of connectivity is why we get centralization, and centralization is why we pay rent for every tiny little program we want to run."

the other thing the internet either caused or sped up was centralization. there used to be a St. Louis ad industry, for instance.
I was explaining to my dad the whole death of local ad agencies the other day, which we got to from "there aren't really local business ads on TV anymore" and all the reasons and attempted remedies, etc.

the correct answer is more centralization and seizing the payment processors, actually
The (ridiculously) long term answer is decentralizing as much of the internet as possible, including payment processors.

But in the short term I think we need to figure out how to apply very strong pressure on payment processors to reverse course on this flagrant bullshit.

As an alum of the Justice Department unit that reviews EOs for form & legality--the Office of Legal Counsel--I've been watching the EOs & memoranda as they came out. What struck me most is the centralization of control and access. Things are happening so quickly that many haven't realized it yet.1/x

Yeah, when historians discuss the National Security Act of 1947, we absolutely stress how the centralization of American military power under the new Department of Defense at the dawn of the Cold War was all about being "politically correct."
Trump on Pete Hegseth: "Secretary of War. It used to be called secretary of war. Maybe for a couple weeks we'll call it that, because we feel like warriors. It used to be called secretary of war ... then we became politically correct ... maybe we'll have to start thinking about changing it."

Again, YOU are the ones killing your own industry. Don't blame anyone else for killing journalism.

These so-called journalists parroting press releases are the biggest sources of the disinformation that has allowed the broligarchy the highest levels of power centralization and control.
“Can ChatGPT experience joy or suffering? Does Gemini deserve human rights?” our tech columnist asks. “Many A.I. experts I know would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”
Should We Start Taking the Welfare of A.I. Seriously?
As artificial intelligence systems become smarter, one A.I. company is trying to figure out what to do if they become conscious.

It's also like not only are you not going to get bananas or coffee or whatever, but a ton of businesses with products you like will simply go under because their profit margins were too slim.

This will mean a massive wipeout of competition and centralization of the market.
The discourse around tariffs has been “things will get more expensive” but I am here to tell you that I am knee deep in reporting on this subject and I strongly suspect that if super high tariffs endure, it will shift to *certain items cease to be available at any price*

he is pretty obsessed with image control, which tends to lead to centralization of social channels in large orgs--have worked places where this has happened
