Lambda Cephei—demure and largely ignored in visible light—stands out with its bright red shock wave to WISE's infrared eyes. Kaler, as usual, has a nice way of describing the star if you would like to know more about it. Click! For the processing on this one, I separated the four WISE channels into two distinct groups, treating each group as if it was a two-channel, pseudogreen image. The dust group (W3 & W4) is given preference for visibility while the star group (W1 &W2) is only faintly applied on top of the dust group as an additive layer. I also learned about some new artifacts in WISE imagery called latents which are leftover spots on the detector where bright sources were previously imaged, so I got rid of those along with the usual annuluses, otherwise known as filter ghosts. Dust Group: Red: W4 (22 μm) Green: pseudogreen Blue: W3 (12 μm) Star Group: Red: W2 (4.6 μm) Green: pseudogreen Blue: W1 (3.4 μm) North is up.

According to expert research (er, something posted on Reddit) the famed "second star to the right" mentioned in Peter Pan is likely Alpha Cephei of the constellation Cepheus, so that seems a good option for Dido given how important a character from that story is gonna turn out to be to her

Mu Cephei is a very large star. An M-class supergiant some 1500 times the size of the Sun, it is one of the largest stars visible to the unaided eye, and even one of the largest in the entire Galaxy. If it replaced the Sun in our fair Solar System, Mu Cephei would easily engulf Mars and Jupiter. Historically known as Herschel's Garnet Star, Mu Cephei is extremely red. Approximately 2800 light-years distant, the supergiant is seen near the edge of reddish emission nebula IC 1396 toward the royal northern constellation Cepheus in this telescopic view. Much cooler and hence redder than the Sun, this supergiant's light is further reddened by absorption and scattering due to intervening dust within the Milky Way. A well-studied variable star understood to be in a late phase of stellar evolution, Mu Cephei is a massive star too, destined to ultimately explode as a core-collapse supernova. The Wizard Nebula (Sharpless 142) in the constellation of Cepheus. This region of star formation is being energized primarily by a massive spectroscopic binary system called DH Cephei. The stars in this system are young, near the start of the main sequence and are a source of X-ray emissions. 🔭
A bright nebula of colorful gases, with a cluster of bright stars that are ionizing it. The primary star system ionizing the gases is a massive binary system named DH Cephei. Cold molecular pillars and bok globules are evident and indicative of star formation. This is the Wizard Nebula or Sharpless 142, 8500 light years distant in the constellation of Cepheus. Six hours of imaging, evenly split over SHO filters. 840mm, cropped.
