Ok for #hexapodecember - my favourite invertebrate of the year was (obvs) a fly

It was this Forcipomyia sp. (Ceratopogonidae - biting midge) that was engorging on the lymph of this Pseudophasmatidae - found in the Peruvian Amazon

I nominate @bertonemyia.bsky.social to continue the hexapod love

True flies (order #Diptera) are amazing & under appreciated! Most people think only of house flies, but there's >160,000 described spp. w/many more to be discovered. They go by many names including mosquitoes, gnats, & midges. Check out the blue eyes on this predatory midge #Ceratopogonidae #FlyWeek

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FIND TODAY
A biting midge (Forcipomyia, Ceratopogonidae)feasting on the viens of the wings of this Pseudophasmatidae. (I may have squealed in the field)
I cant believe that I have actually seen this! Look at how engorged she is

Location - The Peruvian Amazon

A key argument for a 🦟 role was that C. paraensis wasn’t in Cuba, which had a serious Oropouche epidemic, but there hadn’t been a midge survey reported from there since the 1970s. Turns out paraensis was a bit trap-shy, but abundant in human landing catches: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

A note that the bat flower predominantly self pollinates! The downsides of a small text limit.

Camera-trapping of flowers by teams in China and Brazil suggests that a diverse variety of insects visit cocoa flowers and contact reproductive parts, including not just various small fly/midge groups (more than just Ceratopogonidae!) but also ants, aphids, etc.

🦟 Mosquitoes, specifically tiny biting midges (Ceratopogonidae family), are crucial pollinators for the cocoa plant, enabling chocolate 🍫 production by accessing the hidden pollen in the cacao flower, with some species like the gall midge being essential for fruit development.

I. LOVE. THESE. #FLIES. 🥰

If you like #chocolate, so should you! The genus #Forcipomyia (Ceratopogonidae) is the main pollinator of cacao. They're tiny & their larvae live in decaying plant matter. These have sticky droplets along their body for defence.
