This was, of course, entirely predictable. Anti-HPV campaigns are a major part of the global antivaxx movement and scares about Garadasil in particular are common (e.g. the rollout of Cervarix, the HPV vaccine offered in the SA public sector, was met with such scare tactics).

Hey fellow millennials in B.C. Did you ever get vaccinated for HPV? I did but got the Cervarix vaccine, which protects against the two cancer-causing HPV types. The standard vaccine is now Guardasil 9 which protects against nine types, so I'm paying out of pocket to update my vaccination status.

Most of the others had types only covered by Gardasil-9, which was introduced later in 2016.
Conclusion? Newer vaccines would’ve helped some of these patients.

Ah, yes . This is a super common (and slightly confusing) situation, especially for folks who got the earlier versions of the HPV vaccine like Gardasil (approved in 2006) or Cervarix (2009) during high school or college.

The CDC does not currently recommend re-vaccination with Gardasil 9 for people who already completed a prior approved HPV series (like original Gardasil or Cervarix). That’s because you’re still well protected against the most common and aggressive HPV types (esp. 16 & 18).
