When they rocked up to Avignon, they built a new castle, which is known as "New Castle of the Pope", or, in 14th century French, "Chateauneuf du Pape". They make very good wine there now.
anyway, the thing is that in the 14th century the Avignon popes had a castle and full papal court at Avignon to go to, and the support of the French crown to bankroll them, so aside from the relatively shortened life expectancy of just about every pope from Olden Times, they were set up pretty well
