Starting a thread for a new long-term project to research the history of Rangsit, a large plain north of Bangkok that has gone from marsh to rice basket to factory town to exurb over the last 150 years

Hoping it'll get me to engage more local sources, and if I'm living here I figure might as well

Interesting. The fertile Chao Phraya plain is the heart of Siam

But when the Tai first moved south c. 1200, their society was based on using hills to gravity power valley irrigation

The plain was too flat, and so they didn't settle it for awhile

The Siamese are mountain people in a flat land

Chinese migrants, unbound by Siam's feudal system, came to be valued as wage labor

Employed in everything from tin mining and sugar production to canal construction, migrants swelled to over 1 million by 1850

Just found out the Rangsit Canal system, a massive grid of waterways that encompasses the area I live, was constructed in the late 1800s less as an irrigation system and more as a scheme by speculators to maximally exploit a law that allowed canal builders to gain title to adjoining land for sale

Good to know Thailand’s wireless emergency alert system now works. This alert is about flood impact from high discharge rate in the Chao Phraya river and tidal surge causing water levels to rise in the Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani areas.
