Today's lesson for the newer kitchen team members...fire lighting.

First time trying, success ✅

Made a batch of Vaseline-infused cotton balls for the upcoming trip. This, the charcloth I made last week, and a baggie of dryer lint should do the trick (I hope).

YES! LOVE THIS!
I started sewing in lockdown & have made so many shirts! Now obsessed with linen. Wonderful fabric.
I eat a lot of nettles, but next step is learning to process the fiber. Not enough space to grow flax, but nettles are everwhere!
Also made charcloth and light fire with flint & steel!

Camping last weekend gave my 8yo son the chance to practice lighting a campfire with a ferro rod. The charcloth we made last winter was key.

We had a YAC leaders’ training weekend at Bolton Castle and it was the best ever! We slept there, and had a massive banquet dinner cooked in the kitchens, with beer and cider. It’s where I learnt how to start a fire with a flint and steel and charcloth, which I still use at home to light the stove!

Years of wilderness survival training and experience that I mostly use to light a backyard campfire so my kids can host a comedy show and dance recital to 90s pop. And you know what? I’m convinced these skills are being put to the best use.

Some old fashioned fire starting, using just the hammer to heat the piece of steel to the point it ignites the charcloth.

Here's a random I idea already practiced before that I haven't stated before making a bundle w/ charcloth #bushcrafting

Combine a dryer sheet peppermint/pine/lemon scented,

Hand sanitizer, and burn it with your bundle, it would be more preference to use a tincture of oil aromatic compounds.

btw, you can light hand sanitizing wipes or body wipes for a fast flame and create charcloth fir later (charcoal cloth,

smoked not burned entirely, just put a can of clothing in the fire n let it smoke until it's drained of all moisture and any other quality that hinders an ignition),

Made the best of the mild weather with another backyard campout. The dryer lint, charcloth, and Vaseline-infused cotton balls worked perfectly again. Just a few sparks and the fire was raging. Also, kudos to my 6yo for the camera work.

Not sure where he got the charcloth from but he makes an effective cannon.

Me, a reenactor: Can make a steady cookfire from flint, charcloth and twigs (or battery, steel wool and dryer lint), with damp scavenged logs.
Also me: Cannot correctly operate a Duraflame log in a fireplace.
