And so far no one at Chatr (or parent Rogers) can explain why I was able to call it (with it's Chatr SIM) when it only supports 2G & 3G & Rogers says it turned off 3G support Aug 2025!

One of my peers (freshly in social housing!) wanted his latest 💩 phone set up - an xs18pro - a laughable tiny Android 9 3G phone! Despite Rogers/Chatr having turned off 3G support in 2025 the xs17 could make calls but it stymied Google & couldn't set up new G account! #Vancouver

while I understand folks getting their jokes off about dude bringing his cell phone to a bank robbery, I do want to emphasize that the police sought and received more phone data than just the robber's!

So, Hylton went to a judge and got a “geofence” warrant—a special type of warrant that allows the government to draw a virtual “fence” around a geographic location and demand that tech companies hand over information about their users within the fenced-in area at a given time. In effect, geofence warrants work like a digital dragnet, empowering cops to rummage through your phone data if they think a crime may have occurred a few blocks away from you. And on Monday, April 27, the Supreme Court will hear oral argument and debate whether the Constitution has any problem with that. In this case, Chatrie v. United States, Hylton served Google with a geofence warrant that spelled out a three-step process. First, it requested anonymized location data for everyone with a Google account who was within a 150-meter radius of the bank’s approximate latitude and longitude coordinates between 4:20 PM and 5:20 PM on the day of the robbery. Second, the warrant requested additional anonymized location information—including travel outside the fence from 3:50 PM to 5:50 PM—for a subset of the initial list of Google users to be determined by the police. And third, the warrant requested user identity information—such as someone’s name, birthday, phone number, and email address—for another to-be-determined subset of the earlier list.

before cops search somebody or their stuff, they're supposed to AT LEAST have probable cause

but cops have been out here getting "geofence" warrants that let them go through the phone data of anyone and everyone they think was in the vicinity of a possible crime

Formerly respected scientist Pritchard Hawkins (Bill Nighy) buys a shitty new iRobot that can kinda walk around after him on its basic programming but not much else, but it comes with a subscription to Chatr that confabulates so well he decides it must be conscious and slowly goes nuts.
