The Appeals Chamber of the Ethics Commission of the International #ChessFederation (FIDE) has overturned a prior decision to suspend the #Russian Chess Federation (FSR) for two years, according to DW.

Instead, the FSR will now be fined 45,000 euros. If the fine is not paid within 21 days, Russia risks being expelled from FIDE for one year. This decision reverses a June ruling made by the same Ethics Commission following a complaint from the Ukrainian Chess Federation. The complaint stated that the FSR had incorporated clubs from the occupied territories in Ukraine, including Crimea, as well as Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. Additionally, the FSR was criticized for its ties to individuals under international sanctions due to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The reprimand previously issued to FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, a former Russian deputy prime minister with close ties to Vladimir Putin, has also been overturned. The decision of the Appeals Chamber can still be challenged in the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
