He slams his fist upon the table, rattling his teacup and disturbing most of his chesspieces. His eyes, ordinarily host to all manner of mischief, burn with rage at the gall of Ferdinand's direct attack upon his well-crafted carapace. "That's enough!" Khalid snaps. "You are not the first Fodlan noble to storm their way into Tadmor and try to have their way with the royalty, but at least my mother had good intentions! I am already seen as foreign to the people of my very homeland, Ferdinand, and you dare suggest that I, a King without a loyal Kingdom, ostracize myself still further by taking on a male consort?! You have no idea, no idea what the gossip-mongers already have to say about me, and you dare to waltz into my homeland and beg me to make it worse?" Ferdinand flinches, his eyes widening. He had expected to meet resistance when he finally struck directly at Khalid's shell, but the molten agony he found beneath it burned even hotter than he'd guessed. His gaze darts about the room, as though he will find the words to answer the King's outcry with amongst the decadent furniture. "How you fare in the people's estimations will not matter if you fare poorly in your own." "You don't know what you're talking about! How I fare in the people's estimations," Khalid mocks, "is, in fact, more important than how I fare in my own. Some of us have real problems, you selfish, entitled little- ugh! When you're an outsider in every room, you do what you have to, you say what you have to, to earn respect. You cannot.... I, cannot... survive without it." Ferdinand blinks. Risking everything, he reaches across the table in an effort to lay a compassionate hand atop Khalid's. "You cannot survive suffocated, either." Khalid yanks his hand away, his emerald eyes hardening into daggers. "Don't patronize me, you-" Whatever insult the king had prepared fails to pass his lips. Ferdinand just watches, and he suspects that his placidity in the face of such vitriol must be making the King even angrier. "There is very little that you can say to me that I have neither heard from others nor thought of myself," Ferdinand retorts, deliberately keeping his voice as level as he can. A long silence fills the space between them. Countless thoughts, words of advice and comfort, rush through his mind, but Ferdinand stays his tongue, electing to leave Khalid a moment with his thoughts. Khalid, for his part, avoids Ferdinand's eyes, seeming determined to look almost anywhere else. In the silence, Ferdinand can feel Khalid scrambling, desperately patching up the walls he had built around himself. Absent other noise, a memory of Hubert's voice fills Ferdinand's mind. You will get yourself killed, with tactics like that, he'd lectured him from a stool at his bedside in Linhardt's infirmary. Many generals fancy themselves capable of scaling any wall, but only the truly great know when and how to change tact, that they may preserve themselves and seize victory another day soon. This hastily re-crafted wall around the King's heart was taller and better fortified than any that Ferdinand could hope to scale. Archers were posed along the battlement, accompanied by soldiers with cauldrons of boiling oil. Clarity rushes over Ferdinand, his next course of action clear. He speaks, his voice thin.

In 1988, Interplay Entertainment released Battle Chess as a video game version of chess with 2.5D graphics and fighting animations. I'd love to see the game revived for today's hardware and this is how I'd like to see it.
