Color photo of ceramic tile mural depicts the mythological sea monster Scylla. Ermonde Leone sculpted this relief to celebrate local Homeric folklore. The artwork depicts Scylla as a multi-bodied marine entity rising above fishermen, dolphins, and a swordfish—the signature symbol of Chianalea's seafaring heritage. Born in Campania, Leone studied ceramics and sculpture in Avellino and Naples. He in 1957, settling in Reggio Calabria where he taught art for decades and was inspired by the region's cultural heritage. Leone was recognized for his interest in classical antiquity, Mediterranean history, and local maritime legends. This "Scylla" relief is part of a body of work where he explored themes of the sea and local mythologies. In Book 12 of The Odyssey, the hero Odysseus (Ulysses) must navigate his ship through a narrow strait. On one side lives Charybdis, a monster who creates a deadly whirlpool. On the other side sits Scylla, a multi-headed creature waiting on a high cliff to snatch sailors off passing vessels. Following the sorceress Circe’s advice, Odysseus chooses to sail closer to Scylla. He reasons it’s better to lose a few crew members to her jaws than to lose his entire ship to Charybdis's whirlpool. As they pass, Scylla successfully snatches and devours six of his best men. It represents a situation where you are forced to choose between two dangerous options, and must strategically pick the one that inflicts the least damage. Scylla represents the primal, chaotic, and terrifying forces of nature. For ancient sailors navigating the turbulent waters of the real-world Strait of Messina (located right next to the town of Scilla), the story served as a warning about the hazards of low visibility, sudden currents, and hidden rocks. The town of Scilla takes its name from this mythological figure. The inclusion of dolphins and a swordfish in the panel honors the town's fishing practices, which have been active since ancient times.

For millennia, local fishermen in Chianalea (the ancient fishing district in Scilla) have hunted swordfish using traditional wooden boats called feluccas. This relies on ancient harpooning skills passed down through generations. The tile roofs are reminiscent of Spanish villages because the Aragonese and Spanish Crown controlled this area for many years. Escher spent the late 1920s and early 1930s wandering through Southern Italy. The steep, vertical cliffs and cubes of houses built directly on top of each other in Calabrian villages influenced his sense of space. The stark, geometric layouts he drew here laid the structural foundation for his later, more famous works like Waterfall or Relativity. Traveling Calabria in the spring of 1930 was not a casual holiday. Escher and his companions traveled mostly on foot, by mule, or on basic regional trains, carrying heavy sketching equipment through remote, mountainous terrain to capture towns that few foreign artists had ever documented. But despite the look, it has changed and continues to change since it was founded in the Trojan Wars ~1200AD.
