Commemoration during and after WW1 took many forms. Many companies had rolls of honour marking the service and sacrifice of former employees.
Here are the stories of the men of Chiesmans in Lewisham.

The article has Chiesmans in Lewisham. Youngs in Sevenoaks (definitely had vacuum tubes), Medhursts in Bromley, Allders and Grants in Croydon. And I was just in time for the final years of Eaden Lilley in Cambridge (when the John Lewis was still Robert Sayle). Ah....

Reading this made me think of all those department stores I visited as a kid - and some as an adult - that are now gone: Chiesmans in Lewisham, Swan & Edgar in Piccadilly, Medhursts in Bromley, Army & Navy in Victoria…

Colin Cowdrey was married to the daughter of one of the Chiesman cousins who ran the firm at this point and was being set up as a future director in his post-cricket career. In the end the family sold up before he retired from international cricket.

My orange fixation >>>

Seeing this badge on FB brought me right back to us planning our honeymoon in Lewisham's Chiesmans Travel Agents in mid-84.
In late Sep 84, we popped back into their massive department store to purchase this Le Creuset Volcanic Orange Vintage Cast Iron 5 saucepan set & stand.

Yeah, clothes look 1910s. Can't remember whether the refurb of Chiesmans to look like this was pre or post WW1 (complete rebuild was late 1920s)

Another Chiesmans Christmas today - and it's the "Woggle Wonderland" in 1953, part of their wider Christmas 'Toyland'.
And no, I don't know what a 'woggle wonderland' is either, but Santa seems to have been involved.
