On this day in 1960, ethologist Jane Goodall
arrived in Tanzania to begin her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees.

When Dr. Jane documented wild chimpanzees, she did something unheard of in science. She gave them names, not numbers.

She saw that they had personalities, emotions, and social lives – and she proved that knowledge and compassion can go hand-in-hand.

In 1962, a very young woman named Jane Goodall stepped into the African forest.

What she would discover shattered our understanding of the place of human beings in the world.

She revealed that chimpanzees use tools, form bonds, and experience emotions.

I saw Jane Goodall do a talk in my hometown as a kid and she greeted the crowd with "good evening, or as the chimpanzees say, ooo ooo AAAHH AHHHH AHHHH OOOO AHHH OOOO OOOOOOO AHHHH" and everybody stood up and applauded. Swear to God.

You may know Dr. Jane for her work with chimpanzees – but she said that dogs were her favourite animal!

Chimpanzees were too similar to humans, she said, to be her favourite animal. But dogs showed her how animals possess intelligence, personalities, and emotions.

I’m sad to hear the news that the wonderful Jane Goodall is no longer in the world. Her work with chimpanzees at Gombe in Tanzania taught us to look at other apes - and ourselves - differently. I was privileged to meet her later in life and tell her what an inspiration she was to me.
