For the Christology class, the professor asked the seminarians to design and lead a comprehensive, four-week adult faith-formation series on Christology for curious theo nerds and "normies."

I genuinely don't know how Bonhoeffer scholars can read his lectures on Christology and conclude he wasn't a Lutheran. #theology

The Messianic Secret

‘….is a motif in the Gospel of Mark, in which Jesus is portrayed as commanding his followers to maintain silence about his Messianic mission.’

We all know the exorcist obviously follows miaphysite christology
This is like saying that The Exorcist is Greek Orthodox-coded or something lol

Tbh scriptural christology is also inconsistent from book to book. Mark and authentic Paul are adoptionist, John is docetist, etc. (Though both of those positions are articulable within the Jewish-Christian position you quoted, of course.)

(And also because the surviving Churches of the East existed in close proximity with Miaphysite churches that had an opposing divergence in Christology and presumably used "Nestorian" as a term of abuse.)

Yeah, in large part because their formalized Christology comes to nearly the same place as the Chalcedonian one: two substances or essences fused inextricably in one person, BUT unmixed within that fusion.

This is probably explicable in terms from Dragon Ball Z.

ah yes this christology stuff. amusing from an outside perspective. it seems like a problem that also comes about specifically due to epistemological problems of graeco-roman ontology

I'm pretty invested in correct Christology but even I can admit that *in practice* this was as much a debate about grammar as about God. But in a way that's why it was so contentious - because language was so central, the debate shaped how people were allowed to pray and worship. It wasn't abstract
October 2, 2026 at 10:33 AM
Yeah, they don't have to hold to Chalcedonian Christology to have valid baptism. The exact requirements are (a) water gets on you, or you get in water, (b) someone says "I baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit" or words so close as to make no difference, and...

We were talking about Jesus and ending of exile in Christology class. Needless to say, Isaiah 40 was brought up a lot.
Less optimistic than hopeful and redemptive.

Comfort, comfort My people,
says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and proclaim to her
that her forced labor has been completed;
her iniquity has been pardoned.
For she has received from the hand of the LORD
double for all her sins.
i challenge you to post one optimistic take or belief today on bluesky

this needn’t be toxic positivity, just good ol’ run of the mill optimism/hope in the face of a torrential downpour of doom

Through Him all things were made.
In Him was life.
The Word became flesh.

John 1 leaves no room for a created Jesus.

Its a single volume of Institutes of Christian Religion - I need a primary source for my essay contrasting the Christology of 2 of this terms theologians

So I picked Anselm and Calvin because I wanted an early-ish and a later theologian and we start with Melito of Sardis and finish at Calvin!

Even in John, with the "highest" Christology, Jesus' suffering is real and constitutive of His mission, rather than an instructive simulation that teaches other people a lesson

how can Christology be boring, you even have body horror in there
I find it amusing how Reformed critiques of Lutheranism imply that Lutherans believe Christ's human flesh is physically stretched out over the universe

But those chuds can't teach me anything about biblical historicity, first century CE Christology, Pauline soteriology, genuine intent in Jeremiah, or the nature of sin. Or how to talk to women. All good there.

I don't know a lot, but it's an ancient and substantially autonomous tradition — IIRC it adheres to the Nicene Creed but has a distinctive Christology.

Prior to Paul, sin was disobedience and may result in ritual uncleanliness, but not a state of profound spiritual depravity. Paul reframed sin as a cosmic force that let death into the world, in order to make his redemptive Christology fit the narrative.

I did a whole graduate course on Christology (the focus really being the whole historical Jesus thing and its aftermath) and it was so non boring! The lecturer was an Anglican priest who wrote a thesis book on it and it's really non boring too!

This is also why the best liberation theology starts with a very high Christology.
1. Ecclesiology is an extension of Christology.
2. The social doctrine of the Catholic Church as taught by the popes is firmly rooted in Chalcedonian Christology and the Nicene profession of faith.
3. So too is the entirety of the teaching of Second Vatican Council.
