Canadian country music singer Corb Lund expressed frustration after his citizen petition to ban coal mining in Alberta's Eastern Slopes was deemed unsuccessful. The petition, led by the group 'Water, Not Coal,' required 177,732 verified signatures but only 172,000 were confirmed. Elections Alberta cited verification challenges, including a data breach that compromised voter information, as reasons for the petition's failure. Lund argued the verification process was unfair, citing the breach and extrapolation methods used. Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged concerns but emphasized existing policies to protect the environment. Lund accused the government of inaction, noting repeated promises to address coal mining loopholes. The group is now considering legal options, including a judicial review, to challenge the decision.
