A SERIOUS request to @michaelrbloomberg.bsky.social — please create an account for Bloomberg Citylab here on @bsky.app. Citylab has been an excellent platform for articles about cities (I used to write for it, and @langealexandra.bsky.social won a Pulitzer for it!).

REPOST if you support Citylab.
“Toderian, Vancouver’s former planning chief, has identified a 3-part formula for child-friendly downtowns.

Housing is most critical: Without [two or] three-bedroom apts, it’s ‘game-over’ for families in downtowns, he says.”

Read on — my interview on kid-friendly downtowns, in Bloomberg Citylab.
Struggling Downtowns Are Looking to Lure New Crowds
Traditional business districts in cities like Chicago and Portland are still waiting for office workers to return. Can younger residents and families fill the gap?

"Lachlan Cartwright of Breaker writes about the surprise Pulitzer Prize win for Bloomberg CityLab contributing writer @langealexandra.bsky.social given that her work was not submitted by the company and Bloomberg has been trying to shut CityLab. He reports that the Pulitzer likely saved CityLab." 👏

Right! It's certainly a choice for a journalist who writes for fucking CityLab to choose *that* as the takeaway for the article.

E-bike rebates might be the most wildly popular local transportation policy in the US.

I visited Denver – the first American city to offer them– to see if reality matches the hype.

TLDR: It mostly does!

Bloomberg News has won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism for a collection of essays by contributor @langealexandra.bsky.social.

The series published in Bloomberg CityLab explores how urban design and architecture impact parents and kids 🧵
How to Better Design Cities for Families
The architecture of housing, transportation and public space could support children and caretakers, writes design critic Alexandra Lange in her Pulitzer Prize-winning series.

A groundbreaking new study found that the surge in SUVs from 1995 to 2019 reduced Minnesota's highway lane capacity by 9.5%.

Less lane capacity --> More congestion

How SUVs Are Making Traffic Worse
As larger, taller sport utility vehicles took over US roads, they also aggravated highway congestion, according to a new study. It’s yet another ill effect of “car bloat.”

In Bloomberg CityLab, I interviewed engineering prof Wes Marshall about his new book, Killed by a Traffic Engineer, and the reasons why US road designers prioritize car speed over street safety.

The biggest source of urban noise? Motor vehicles.

In Bloomberg CityLab , I wrote about the quiet (and healthy) pleasures of car-free and car-light neighborhoods.

Those living in Europe or Asia can buy all kinds of minicars that are smaller, cheaper, and more maneuverable than a full-sized car.

But in the US, rigid regulations get in the way.

In Bloomberg CityLab, I explained why cities must build cycling *networks* – not just lanes.

It’s a lesson that many elected leaders have yet to learn (esp Ontario’s Doug Ford, who is taking a sledgehammer to Toronto's cycling network).

🧵
Why the Best Bike Lanes Always Get Blamed
A standoff over cycling infrastructure and traffic congestion in Toronto shows why building protected bike lanes on essential corridors draws controversy along with riders.

Seventy years ago, the writer Lewis Mumford warned that urban highways would be a disaster:

“This is pyramid building with a vengeance, a tomb of concrete roads and ramps covering the dead corpse of a city.”

He was right. We just didn’t listen.

Me, in CityLab 🧵
The Dark Prophet of Car-Clogged Cities
70 years before congestion pricing landed in New York City, Lewis Mumford sounded the alarm on letting automobiles run amok in America’s downtowns.
