I was an orientation leader in college, one of my kids wanted to double major in architecture and civEng. I say “probably not worth it, hardly any overlap in classes, jobs want one or the other.“ Ten years later, alumni event, dude is there, he did it, remembers me, “discouraging orientation guy“ 🫤

Apt blocks with preplanned sukkot-balconies are cool, the hodgepodge contraptions the "Me'a She'arim Dept of CivEng" comes up with... less so. Sometimes literally suspended in the air by a single pole over a sidewalk.

One is a role for a qualified EngTech MICE, TIStructE or BTEC Level 3 Diploma in civil engineering plus relevant experience.

One favourite bit when working in #HighwayMaintenance for 20+ yrs (with no #CivEng qualifications) was ‘inventing’ recipes for concrete/bituminous materials for specific jobs.
e.g. aggregate min/max sizes, % of grano dust, binder specs, etc. 😎

Know who didn't think it was important? Employers. I went into IT.

I got a degree in Environmental Engineering back in the early 90s, CivEng with a chemistry minor (specializing in water chemistry), due to the importance of acting immediately on the climate crisis.

I’m obviously not a parent - but my mother definitely helped guide my major selection. She wanted me to major in CivEng and I gave it my best shot. Hated it. So we talked and discussed and I switched to SysEng and was much happier.

To be fair the London undeground does have issues going south of the Thames, clay vs rock is very difficult to drill through not to mention depth/breadth of river so there’s valid reasons it might not have been constructed (though I’m not CivEng so can’t speak authoritatively on them)
