Portrait of Cižąhaka ("In the Back of a Lodge") by Henry Inman, circa 1832-1833. He traveled to Washington DC in a delegation of Ho-Chunk leaders from present day Wisconsin. He carried the Staff of Life that had markings representing changes of the seasons and weather.
Painting of a Ho-Chunk man holding a staff. “Cižąhaka ("In the Back of a Lodge") was a tribal leader who traveled to Washington, DC, in 1828 with a delegation from the Ho-chungra ("people of the Big Voice") nation, who lived in present-day Wisconsin prior to the arrival of white settlers who tried to remove them by force. Cizahaka holds a staff that he described as ‘the staff of life,’ with markings representing changes in the seasons and the weather. He cradles a steel hatchet in his left arm and wears a silver cuff and silver bead earrings. The silver medal with the profile portrait of a US president on the front (and an image of shaking hands with the inscription ‘Peace and Friendship’ on the back), typically was given as a gift at diplomatic meetings between the US government and Native American leaders.” At the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
