There's no way to sugarcoat this: Yesterday was the single-worst day in American history in the fight against both kleptocracy and foreign influence campaigns.

This is for many reasons—and for one large reason.

Pam Bondi is the first AG in American history who was a lobbyist for a foreign dictatorship. And in her first move as AG: "The Justice Department is scaling back enforcement of laws governing foreign lobbying transparency and bribes of foreign officials." news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/...

Put another way: Elon Musk is currently worth approximately $825 billion more than John D. Rockefeller, the richest of the robber barons, was worth, even adjusted for inflation.

Nearly two weeks after the release of UNITED STATES OF OLIGARCHY, and one of the clearest responses to the book is that folks don't know just how much worse the US now is in terms of wealth inequality than it was during the Gilded Age.

And how long is it (days? weeks?) before Trump starts saying, "In order to protect American Greenland, we gotta have those Canadian islands up there. Gotta have it. Baffin? Ellesmere? That's ours. Why should Canada have them?"

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
All of the Trump administration’s reasons for seizing Greenland—it’s for Arctic “defense,” Denmark can’t do the job, there’s almost no one there, and what right does Denmark have, anyway?—can all apply to Canada’s Arctic islands.

Ottawa’s gotta start preparing—now.
January 7, 2026 at 3:08 PM
I honestly don't know how NATO survives an American push to seize Greenland. What ally would ever trust the U.S. again?

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
Some of the things Trump annexing Greenland would do:

—Fracture (maybe even destroy) the trans-Atlantic alliance
—Accelerate Canada‘s nuclearization
—Destroy any effort to jointly oppose Chinese invasion of Taiwan
—Spark a potential anti-American insurgency *in Greenland itself*

With Trump’s re-election, Ukraine suddenly faces a new decision: should it develop its own nuclear weapons?

Or a better question: why *shouldn’t* Ukraine re-nuclearize?

All of these on their own would be disasters for US foreign policy, offsetting whatever “gain“ the US might see from forcing Greenland to become American.

This is basically the Texas or Hawaii model—except in those instances, Congress bucked immediate annexation.

Which is what would have to happen again.

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
You can see the contours of the Trump admin's next moves emerging: split Greenland and Denmark, recognize Greenland independence, and immediately announce annexation.

This isn't a rhetorical question! You can't just hand-wave away years of Russian revanchism already evident in the early 1990s under Yeltsin.

I've never seen any of these incidents addressed by any of the NATO expansion critics.

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
Do *any* of the NATO-expansion-was-a-mistake folks ever address the fact that Russia was already occupying a chunk of Moldova, already interfering in Georgia, and already doing everything it could to obliterate Chechnya years before NATO ever expanded in the 1990s?

Add to this Kushner's Serbia project, which collapsed because he had no idea about local dynamics or why he would be viewed so negatively—yet another failure to attach to Kushner's name.

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
And if and when Kushner's project in Albania falls apart (or the government falls!), it'll just be the latest in a long, long string of failures for Kushner.

Failed media mogul. Notoriously terrible real estate investor. Iran, Gaza, Ukraine negotiations—all failures.

And now it's the Canadians' turn to underestimate the threats they're facing from Trump—especially once Trump claims Greenland as the US's own.

It's a strategic nightmare for Canada, which is only going to get worse.
'
bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
Ottawa is still under-estimating Trump's threats. Would there be a massed American troop movement against Vancouver? Probably not.

But could American troops suddenly start popping up in the Canadian Arctic, to "secure American trade routes"? Absolutely.

www.economist.com/the-americas...
January 9, 2026 at 10:40 PM
Also: Trump's talk about turning Canada into the "51st state" takes up all of the oxygen, but remember when he specifically talked about moving the border from the 49th parallel Canadian officials have to absolutely consider that as part of a real threat from the U.S. now.

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
And how long is it (days? weeks?) before Trump starts saying, "In order to protect American Greenland, we gotta have those Canadian islands up there. Gotta have it. Baffin? Ellesmere? That's ours. Why should Canada have them?"

If it wasn't Trump, who the hell okayed this meeting to give Musk access to the US's secret war-plans against China? Did Hegseth do it on his own accord? Did someone tell Hegseth that Trump okayed it?

Will Congress do anything to get to the bottom of this?

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
This has to be one of the most shocking things in Trump's second term: the wealthiest man in the world, who China has significant leverage over, was set to get access to US war plans against China—and the US president didn't even know about it.

This is all completely plausible, even likely, for Trump in 2028. He's renominated, he's on the ballot, he claims victory—and then claims "the people have demanded a third term, and who am I to turn down the people?"

And then what happens?

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
Sure, serving a third term as president is barred by the Constitution. But the Constitution doesn't ban:

—A political party nominating a president who's already served twice
—A two-term president appearing on election ballots
—A two-term president claiming victory, regardless of the actual outcome
April 7, 2025 at 1:21 PM
This is even more true now than it was a few months ago. Armenia hosting an EU summit, Kyrgyzstan(!) suddenly pushing back against Moscow's narratives, Ukraine taking the upper hand in the war—and more signs of Russian decline to come.

bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
Russia's pretensions at great power status are obviously ridiculous.

But at some point—given that Moscow is now a vassal state for China, that its influence in the Caucasus and Europe has collapsed, etc etc—you have to wonder if it's fair to still call Russia even a *regional* power.

If only we'd listened to Zbig on Russia far earlier—not lying to ourselves about Yeltsin, doing more (or anything!) to support Chechnya, realizing that Russia was hurdling toward fascism—we'd all be in a far better place. bsky.app/profile/cjcm...
This 1994 essay from Brzezinski is the single-most prescient thing I've ever read about Russia: a country that even then was transforming into a revanchist autocracy, dedicated to restoring empire and demolishing Ukrainian sovereignty.

Incredible foresight.

No one's saying that the past month has been *the* turning point in Russia's war in Ukraine... but it sure might be seen that way. (Someday.)

Ukraine's new advantage in long-range drone strikes, Russia's accelerating economic fracture, sudden bursts of discontent in Russia itself—all at once.
