Saw loads of Devil's Fingers (Clathrus archeri) in the woods today, and a couple of flies lapping up the stinky stuff.

I wonder what effect they have on the woodland ecosystem, underground.

A discovery in the Pyrenees: With its almost alien appearance, the red lattice fungus (Clathrus ruber) is one of those fungi that is impossible to miss. Its flesh-coloured lattice-like sphere, about the size of a tennis ball, pushes its way out of a dirty eggshell-coloured casing, known as the ‘witch’s egg’. Over the course of evolution, the Red Lattice Fungus has developed a sophisticated strategy that no longer leaves spore dispersal to chance. Its red colour and the smell of carrion specifically mimic the favourite food of blowflies: rotting flesh. Inside the lattice-like sphere lies the greenish spore mass, which is greedily sucked up by the attracted flies. This ensures the targeted dispersal of spores. Scientifically, this is known as endozoochory. The fungal spores are transported through the insects’ digestive tracts and, ideally, end up back on the ground after excretion, where they germinate. The cycle is complete. It is a saprophyte that feeds on dead organic matter. Its fungal hyphae permeate the soil and absorb dissolved nutrients. The fungus can remain there for a long time without us noticing its presence. The actual organism lives in hiding. Incidentally, this applies to all species of fungus whose fruiting bodies we see as mushrooms on the forest floor or on trees.
