Farm fact: the South is famous for clayey red soil, but a lot of it is actually... sand. Like beach sand. See the yellow on the map here.

Hairy Vetchling Lathyrus hirsutus in mid-June on the SE Hampshire coast. It's not native here, as far as we know, but the habitat (south-facing clayey grassland - in this case, capped landfill) mimics its likely native sites in South Essex. plantatlas2020.org/atlas/2cd4p9... @bsbibotany.bsky.social

This bronze age wooden spear shaft is over three thousand years old! Radiocarbon dated to 1610-1430BC, it was recovered from excavations at Shardlow Quarry, Derbyshire.

… non-native plants “naturalizing” (becoming good at growing in a particular area) does not mean that they are now native or that they can fill all the ecosystem roles of native plants. Clayey soil is good soil. (So is sandy soil. So is loamy soil. Soil is just awesome.)

Fort Rock, about a mile north of a town with the same name in Central Oregon, is a tuff ring. It was formed when a basaltic volcano erupted in a shallow ice-age (pluvial) lake. The resulting steam explosions flung hot shattered rock, quicky altering to clayey palagonite, into a ring-shaped berm. ⚒️

these items were packed in clayey mud (and as such, very well-preserved). but what that indicates, to me, is that they've been down there for a good while--and they resurfaced only because the lake has become a walk-path.

Impressive piece of truck on organic-rich clay filled with sticks and seeds. Probably 4000-6000 years old. Drowned when sea level rose following the end of the last glaciation.
