Chinas Cleantech-Exporte vermeiden 450 Mio. Tonnen CO2
Chinas Cleantech-Exporte vermeiden 2026 rund 450 Millionen Tonnen CO2. Am stärksten sinken die Emissionen im globalen Süden.

Today on Volts: most of cleantech world seems to have accommodated itself to giant AI data centers, but @ketanjoshi.co is having none of it. He's been a relentless critic, tracking the hyperscalers' broken climate promises, rising emissions, & abysmal community relations. We get into all of it.

I am so sick of data center & AI pitches in my inbox. I miss when the cleantech community was focused on decarbonization.

More stats from the article by @laurimyllyvirta.bsky.social

* China's cleantech exports in 2026 will avoid as much CO2, net of manufacturing, as Brazil emits in a yr
* Over their lifetime they'll avoid 8,400MtCO2
* Three-quarters of this is in the global south

One key question for both the emissions implications and trade policy implications is: are China’s cleantech exports additional, or are they simply displacing exports from other countries in a zero-sum dynamic?

Strikingly, Chinese clean tech exports to the U.S. are growing this year when accounting for indirect trade through third countries. Despite the Trump administration’s efforts to curb cleantech adoption and restrict imports, robust demand for clean solutions persists.

A point I've been making for the past 5 years or so is becoming much more clear.

"The primary reason for all this concerns cost: “Unsubsidized renewable energy remains the most cost competitive form of new-build generation,” according to Lazard’s latest benchmarking analysis. "

In short, 2026 is turning out to be another bumper year for clean energy deployment around the world, helped by the second fossil fuel shock of the decade, and China is reaping the benefits of its massive economic bet on cleantech manufacturing.

China's the biggest cleantech exporter but not as “dominant” as many think. In EVs, wind, heat pumps & solar inverters, it makes up much less than half the global total. Significant non-Chinese battery & solar panel supply exists too, although much relies on inputs from China.

Democrats should campaign around climate change with messages that focus on how renewable energy and cleantech deployment will bring down the cost of fuel by reducing demand for it until after 2028.

From the very start, we approached fossil supply policy as complementary to massive build out of renewables/cleantech. So it's a little frustrating to see it framed (and dismissed) as either/or.

"Battleground state" Democrats absolutely should not focus their campaign on climate change.

Democrats should campaign around climate change with messages that focus on how renewable energy and cleantech deployment will bring down the cost of fuel by reducing demand for it until after 2028.
shorturl.at/Qfoih There’s a lot riding on the results, including how much more damage tRrump can do to the climate. The Guardian examined campaign websites of Democratic & Republican Senate candidates in 8 battleground states. Of all candidates surveyed, only two explicitly mentioned climate change.
Why aren’t Democrats talking about climate?
Long story short: Billionaire-backed centrist groups told them not to. But with the midterms days away, is that really a good idea?

Over on Twitter, CleanEcon: “Cleantech startups”? Signatories include Mercuria, a major oil and gas trader; Molten Industries, which processes methane; Syzygy Plasmonics, which makes aviation fuels; nuclear fusion startups; and venture capital firms. Calling this a “clean tech” is BS! #KillBAAJA
