The Delphic precepts of Alexandria-in-Sogdia were copied & brought to the city by Clearchus who walked 3,000 miles from Delphi to the Oxus around 300-250 BC. Greeks in Afghanistan & Pakistan became Buddhists around 200 BC, 300 years before the religion arrived in China.

A man who decides to starve, despite the kindness of Bion and the stubbornness of Clearchus, is a coward. Play the fucking game bozo. Pleasure is worth pain, and if all else fails, you can always get lucky 🍀

Found a draft of an article I pitched and had accepted by History Today from 2018(!). The old editor strung me along for a long time and then ghosted me. So I forgot about it...until yesterday! So with some tweaking I have chucked it up on my newsletter.

in some exceptional cases students of Platonic philosophy risked their lives against tyrants. The killing of Clearchus of Heraclea in 353 BC by a cohort led by his own court philosopher is an example of a tyrannicide.

[Description of a monstrous hag in "Thealma And Clearchus" by John Chalkhill (1600-1642)]:

Hang down about her shoulders, which she shakes
Into disorder; "
