Clun Castle, Shropshire. Originally a timber Normandy castle, it became less defensively crucial in late 13thC following Edward I’s conquest of Wales. Rebuilt as (effectively) a hunting lodge in 14thC, in deliberately Normandy style. The tower was unusually built into side of the mound. #cluncastle

It is hard to convey the sheer scale of some earthworks in a photo, but this old shot of #ClunCastle has a good go. The works began with a simple motte and bailey soon after the conquest, though the Great Tower (pictured) is prob. early 14th century. #MotteMonday #Castles #Shropshire
