@tk.gg was a huge help in the run up to the launch. It's such a luxury for an open source project to have an actual product manager who can go out and talk to users. I was particularly lucky to have someone who had spent the past decade battling with CMSs at @financialtimes.com and other news orgs
And – though I had very little to do with this – I'm very proud of what @mk.gg and the team around @emdashcms.com have created.

This can genuinely now be the 'spiritual successor to WordPress', the team have built a prototype into a real 1.0 product.

And “I'll just build it with AI” doesn't get you out of any of this. Neither does switching CMSs or writing everything yourself. Whatever you build still needs security review and ongoing maintenance.

Hacking on my neocities site reminds me of why I was so excited to get access to the early iterations of CMSs. I suck at coding and it pisses me off! And now with my TBI I am not as smart and it gives me a head ache.

WTF won't the god damned web ring do-hickies all go in one fucking line! […]

This does make sense from a publishing standpoint. Where it starts to get complex is when you need multiple admins for a website.

I'm looking at Standard Site even implemented in existing CMSs and I'm not seeing quite all of the connections I have in my head? It might not be a clean idea yet tbh.

We’ll never know the exact number of users, but based on my intensive tracking of GitHub repositories, this increase should be accurate. I’m sure no one else in the CMS industry does this kind of research, which includes finding out which CMSs people are migrating from.

Which CMSs are you actually looking at?: Knowing the odds sharpens every guess. WordPress powers 40.7% of all websites, which is a 58.9% share of the CMS market, per W3Techs as of August 2026. Those tw…

CMS gave MA plans a 2.48% rate bump for 2027, 27x what it first proposed. The real number is 4.98% with risk trend added, and both hide one quiet decision.

Goodness me, I wonder what the owners of literal physical Disneyworld could be thinking about a studio with a core competency in building theme park CMSs, truly baffling

Flawed forensics! The CMS isn’t dead. There’s been a murder, but AI's victim was misidentified. 🕵️‍♀️

#AI makes content cheap. But who approves? Who can change it? Which version is authoritative? Who is responsible for what’s published?

The #CMS matters more than ever.

The Website Builder Is Dead, Long Live Content Management
I can’t help but feel that many CMSs are treating AI like kids in a candy store. There are plenty of exciting things we can do with AI. But as agents, prompts, and AI features pile up, I wonder whethe...

One question keeps coming up when thinking about entities and GEO: Why do we tie an entity's digital identity to the CMS that happens to describe it today?
CMSs change. Websites get rebuilt. Domains can change.
The entity doesn't.

Before that there were a few lightweight editors that were actually pretty okay. "HoTMetaL" was the one I used, it was the same general scope as a BBCode editor. Before CMSs it was reasonable that various departments would want to mark stuff up by hand.

There are whole generations of creators, tool developers, and web users who arrived after the days of “browser wars” and “html generators” and CMSs, after the rise of the sisyphean “separate content from presentation” labor. Back then, it was easy to confuse it with the desire for “clean markup”
In the late 90's people started using WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver to make websites, instead of by hand, and the html produced was famously complete dogshit.

There were weird <br> tags everywhere, it'd look normal but be a huge pain in the ass to modify or figure out what fucked up, etc

Are there any interesting new open-source CMSs gunning for the WordPress market? I kind of feel like the CMS market has gotten a bit boring. Or maybe (hopefully) I’m just not informed enough anymore.
