There was also, overall evidence that homes in coaltip areas face 40% higher premiums than the Welsh average as a whole. It's worth noting that the communities living at the foot of these coaltips are also among the least wealthiest in the UK.

Really proud of this research we worked on for @roundourwayuk.bsky.social . The people of Aberfan paid the ultimate price for the first fossil fuel revolution. The coal was extracted along with the wealth that went with it.
What was left behind was dangerous and unsightly waste land, 2,600 coaltips

Aberfan community marks 60 years since disaster as memory fades and coal tips remain a threat
On the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, the Welsh village is reflecting on preserving the memory of the tragedy that claimed 144 lives when a coal waste tip collapsed onto Pantglas Primary School on October 21, 1966. Survivors like David Davies, now 68, and Gaynor Madgwick, who lost siblings in the disaster, are leading efforts to ensure the community's history is not forgotten. Davies, chair of the Aberfan Memorial Charity, has been preparing for the anniversary, emphasizing the importance of education for new generations. The community is organizing events including a new concert requiem by Paul Mealor and a play about the volunteers who helped after the disaster. Amgueddfa Cymru is launching an exhibit featuring personal items donated by survivors, such as schoolbooks and a dress belonging to Madgwick's siblings. The National Library of Wales has published corrected books of remembrance listing the names of all victims, and an online portal has been created to digitize historical documents. Despite decades of campaigning, the National Coal Board was never held accountable for the disaster, with no prosecutions and minimal compensation for families. The government later misappropriated funds from a disaster relief fund. Sixty years on, 2,000 disused coal tips still pose safety and environmental risks across south Wales, with recent landslides in Tylorstown and Cwmtillery highlighting the ongoing danger. The Welsh government has established a Disused Tips Authority and pledged £220m for remediation, though the actual cost is estimated at over £600m. Madgwick, speaking at the memorial garden where the school once stood, expressed sadness that lessons from Aberfan have not been learned, stating she survived 'for a reason' to share the story and ensure it matters.

60 years ago this week there was a coal tip slip in Aberfan, which killed 144 people including 116 children.
This week we should stop and remember those who lost their lives, having been put at risk in a way they should never have been.

👀 "When it was put to her that it was far short of the up to £600m previously estimated to be needed for coaltips, Reeves said: "No, the £118m is what the Welsh government asked for from the UK government and we've delivered that in full."

🚨 The full £600m is essential to protect #Wales' #CoalTips!

We cannot wait any longer - our communities deserve safety.

I’ve only recently become aware of her work. Through Lobel I now discover she had a residency in the former coal mining region of Borinage where Van Gogh spent time as an evangelist (the art thing came later). Will have to check her book on it, ‘And from the Coaltips a Tree will Rise”.
